Let’s start by looking at Glinda, the good witch of the South in The Wizard of Oz. In my opinion, she represents the tremendous female qualities we get from nature. This representation of female energy is just a part of what we inherited from our millions of years of evolution. Glinda is portrayed with great beauty, just like Nature herself.
Glinda is much like the Greek Goddess of wisdom, Athena. She uses her powers and wisdom to help and guide Dorothy. Note that Dorothy is open-minded, almost childlike toward Glinda, and we see Glinda arrive when needed most. Dorothy receives nurturing guidance from Glinda, or nature, empowering her along her journey. Many don’t think much about nature, and we remain blind to her teachings.
- “You’ve always had the power, my dear; you just had to learn it for yourself.”—Glinda to Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
. . .
- “A wizard is never late or early; he arrives precisely when he means to.”—Gandalf to Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Similarly, in J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, Frodo Baggins receives similar help and counsel from a Wizard named Gandalf. At first sight, we view Gandalf as almost a joke. He is old and frail-looking. His manner and dress are unassumingly plain and nearly comical in character. Gandalf is also known for showing up with extraordinary powers at crucial times. Like Glinda, he mentors others to develop their inner powers as well. Frodo is also open-minded to the counsel he receives from this mysterious mentor, who reminds us of either Odin or Merlin.
We are given potential at birth. This is our human heritage. It is not held by gender, race, sexual orientation, sexual identity, or social status. It takes age, but that is only because our potential has to be developed, which takes time. The heritage of human potential is in the child. It has yet to be unfolded.
Human potential is a fantastic thing that we take for granted, but we should not. If we take it for granted, we tend not to see it. From that perspective, it is as if it does not exist. Yet, every great person saw it in themselves at some point and then set out to develop it. That is how they became great. They used what was already within them.
Glinda represents the help we get from nature when we listen to her counsel. Without Glinda’s help, it is certain Dorthy will fail in OZ. Likewise, without the wise Gandalf, Frodo Baggins is probably done for one hour after he leaves the Shire. These characters represent the help we get from nature when we focus on sharpening our skills. Once we do the work and sharpen our tools, the aid we receive in our time of need seems to come from nowhere. It can be seen as almost magic.
How to learn more
The book Become the Boss of You addresses these qualities and many others. The idea is to discover how to develop these qualities and be a good boss to yourself—to develop them and use them so you can respect yourself and others.
“A good Boss does not allow themselves to be too distracted to rule over their distractions.” — Ishall Dogood
Do you respect yourself? Do you encourage and recognize your accomplishments? Do you allow yourself to have a good work-life balance? A good boss has learned how to control themselves.
